Rabat est la capitale administrative du Maroc et un site du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO, riche en monuments islamiques et coloniaux parmi les plus importants du pays. La Kasbah des Oudayas, édifiée par les Almohades au XIIᵉ siècle sur un promontoire au-dessus de l'estuaire du Bou Regreg, est l'un des plus beaux exemples d'architecture militaire almohade au Maroc, avec ses ruelles blanchies à la chaux, la porte Bab Oudaia et un jardin andalou en terrasse. La Tour Hassan, commencée en 1195 sous le calife Yacoub al-Mansour, aurait été le minaret le plus haut du monde à 86 mètres si elle avait été achevée ; elle culmine aujourd'hui à 44 mètres, entourée d'une esplanade de colonnes, face au Mausolée de Mohammed V. Chellah, au sud de la ville, superpose une cité romaine (Sala Colonia) et une nécropole mérinide, avec des cigognes nichant sur les minarets chaque printemps.
