Skhirat Beach

ROYAL COASTLINE

Skhirat is one of the longest continuous Atlantic beaches near Rabat, running for kilometres between Temara to the north and Bouznika to the south. The royal summer palace of Skhirat — closed to visits but unmistakable — sits at the northern end of the strand, and gave the resort its quietly upmarket reputation. The sand is wide, the swell is steady, and most of the development clusters around the small town of Skhirat Plage at the centre, with beach clubs, seafood restaurants and a few villas-on-the-sand for rent.

The drive from Rabat is thirty minutes via the coastal road. Grand taxis run continuously from the Rabat side for around 25–40 MAD per seat (rates rise on summer weekends) and drop at the central Plage stretch; a rental car or a private taxi gives the most flexibility, especially for the quieter southern stretch where there is no public transport coverage. The northern end near the royal palace is fenced and patrolled — stay well south of the marked perimeter. The rest of the beach is fully public, with no entry fee anywhere along the sand.

July and August weekends, especially Sunday afternoons, are the busy moments; weekdays even in peak summer are calm, and out-of-season the southern stretch feels almost deserted. June through September gives warm water and full club facilities; May and October are empty and pleasant; winter storms bring powerful Atlantic swell that is beautiful to watch but rules out swimming. Beach clubs around the central town rent loungers and umbrellas in season; lifeguards are posted at the main clubs in summer only, so swim where the staff are when there is any doubt about currents.
